RCS SPORT - EMG / GRAVITY MEDIA ITALY: STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP TO FURTHER SUPPORT ITALIAN CYCLING

27 May 2025

Milan, 27th May 2025 – EMG / Gravity Media Italy, a leader in broadcast services and media production, part of international EMG / Gravity Media Group today announced the renewal of its multi-year partnership with RCS Sport.

The common goal is to further improve the quality of the TV product of the most important cycling events on the Italian calendar in the coming years.

An increasingly complete 360-degree service will be provided at the production / broadcasting level, considering the needs of the rights holder (RCS Sport), the territories involved and the sponsors, with an emphasis on state-of-the-art technology.

Specifically, EMG / Gravity Media Italy will be responsible to produce nine World Tour competitions, the most important of which, in terms of media relevance and format structure, is undoubtedly the Giro d'Italia (this year the 'Pink Race' finishes its 108th edition). An international sporting event attracting millions of fans each year from all over the world (consisting of 21 stages covering a total of 3,413.3 km).

The new association made its season debut in March with the Strade Bianche and Tirreno-Adriatico. Followed by Milano-Torino (19th March), Milano-Sanremo (22nd March), the Giro d'Abruzzo (15th-18th April), and now the Giro d'Italia. Shortly followed by the Giro Women (6th-13th July), Gran Piemonte (9th October) and finally Il Lombardia (11th October 2025).

Live drones will be used during the popular 'Pink' race and the signal from these integrations will also be used in the main feed. Another new feature is the Sanremo Women's race, which for the first time took place at the same time as the men's race (in parallel on a second course).

For this occasion, EMG / Gravity Media Italy managed a simultaneous double production with Outside Broadcast truck NOVA 128 deployed, and the signal coming from two bridging aircraft, received at two reception points and distributed on multiplexed satellite beams to manage the double race and the aircraft autonomy.

Nine HD signals from seven motorcycles and two helicopters in the race, with 11 4G/5G signals, a satellite drone and 13 cameras in the finish and pre-finish areas, made up the important camera workflow of this iconic race, which was an appetiser for the Giro.

Cutting-edge production and technology

EMG / Gravity Media Italy produces the international live signal as well as a wide range of content for the Giro d'Italia 2025 (the flagship of the RCS Sport branded sports formats). It also produces a weekly magazine of the Giro and transmits a multiplex of moving camera signals via satellite to Warner Bros. Discovery. This will provide viewers on the Discovery+ and MAX platforms with an alternative mode of vision via a multiview feed that will combine the international signal with the three main signals from the motorcycles and helicopters at all times during the race.

Not to be missed, as is tradition, are the mountain stages that could shake up the final classification. Particular attention will be paid to stage 20 (Saturday 31 May) from Verres to Sestriere (203 kilometres and 4,500 metres of climbing). For the insiders, this is probably the decisive stage of the Giro 2025. It will take in the Col de Lys (13.7km, maximum gradient 12%) as an appetiser for the Colle delle Finestre and Cima Coppi at 2,178 metres. This is the fifth time in the history of the Giro that the Colle delle Finestre has been included in the 'pink' route (in 2018, the race was won by Kenyan champion, naturalised Briton Chris Froome, after a solo ride).

Logistics and the challenge of connectivity

The logistical aspect is one of the greatest challenges of this partnership: over 120 people, including technicians and operators, will be involved in moving from one stage to another every day.

The TV compound, with OB truck galleries and support vehicles (adaptable to the specific characteristics of each location), will guarantee the continuity of the signal along a route that winds its way through Italy, with the special feature this year of the 'Gran Partenza' from Albania (a triptych of stage races, including the individual time trial in Tirana).

Graphics innovation and AI

One of the strengths of this edition is once again the use of advanced live graphics, including pixel tracking systems for (real-time) visualisation of cyclist data (with a dedicated operator for 'data-driven graphics' activities only). This will enhance the graphics and the new visual development of the data collected by the innovative Velon system.

The GPS tracking system, combined with Artificial Intelligence (AI), makes it possible to follow each runner in the race and provide detailed information such as ranking position, elapsed time and distance to the finish line, all of which can be viewed during aerial filming.

This technology, which has been used successfully in other international races, will further increase the interest in the Giro d'Italia 2025 and provide the public with an even more immersive experience.

OB truck and cameras: unique images for the audience

The whole TV production involves over 15 mobile production units, including those used by host production and rights holders. High frame rate (HFR) cameras will be used to capture every detail of the race.   In addition, drones will be used in innovative ways during the mountain stages, providing spectacular images and unique perspectives of the race.

Claudio Cavallotti - Managing Director of EMG / Gravity Media Italy said:  "This new partnership with RCS Sport will allow us to pursue a project of growth and development over the coming years. Already in the previous three-year agreement, we introduced important technological innovations and a high level of logistical management, offering viewers an unprecedented visual and informative experience. The international strength of our Group (which includes strategic countries in terms of experience and know-how, such as France and Belgium) will allow us, among other things, to combine the experience gained in the field with the specific features of all the structures involved, for an increasingly exciting and high-tech production. In short, we have developed a production plan that will guarantee excellence in live coverage of some of the most beautiful and challenging races in the world. In this way, we will be able to guarantee an overall increase in quality, with production standards that are even superior to those of previous editions”.
